Weight Management Q & A

How can weight management improve my overall health and wellness?

Carrying a significant volume of extra weight increases your risk of a wide range of negative health outcomes. Losing even a moderate amount of weight can significantly reduce your risk level.

Some of the health problems with a clear link to being overweight or obese include:

  • Heart disease
  • Stroke
  • Type 2 diabetes
  • Gallbladder disease
  • Dementia
  • Sexual dysfunction
  • Kidney disease
  • Osteoarthritis
  • Depression

This is not a comprehensive list; carrying excess weight can harm virtually every organ and system within the human body. Medically supervised weight management offers the chance to lose weight in a way that doesn’t place undue strain on your body and is ultimately sustainable.

What are the one-on-one components of weight management?

Your weight loss journey is unique, so your weight loss program must also be unique. The process begins with a comprehensive assessment that determines your body mass index (BMI) and nutritional evaluation and gathers routine health information.

You’ll have a face-to-face meeting with Kathleen to review the results of these efforts and discuss your eating habits. You’ll also work to identify any emotional triggers that factor into your nutritional decisions.

Medication might play a role in your weight loss process, including options like Wegovy®, an injectable semaglutide medication that helps regulate your appetite. Broadway Healthcare offers a Patient Care Liaison to help you navigate the process of having drug therapy covered by your health insurance.

Drug therapy is never used as a stand-alone treatment, so there will always be additional support as your treatment progresses.

What role do group meetings play in my weight management journey?

Monthly group meetings are a required part of the weight management program. You can choose to attend these meetings in person or through videoconferencing.

Several benefits come with being part of a community throughout your weight loss experience. Some of these benefits include:

  • The chance to learn from the experience of others
  • Emotional support
  • Opportunities to learn new weight management tactics
  • Motivational support
  • A team to help you stay accountable
  • Guidance and advice on setting monthly goals
  • A social setting where you can celebrate achievements

Even if you think group meetings aren’t for you, it’s important to give these sessions a try. Many people find group meetings to be the most beneficial aspect of their weight loss experience.
