Women's Health Specialist

Women's Health Q & A

What is women’s health?

Women’s health is a medical specialty that focuses on gender-specific concerns, such as sexual health, reproduction, contraception, and menopause care. As a former sexual assault nurse examiner, Kathleen provides trauma-informed gynecological care.

Kathleen also strives to create a safe, welcoming environment for members of the LGBTQA+ community. She provides comprehensive gynecological services for transgender patients and individuals who are in the transition process.

What is included in women’s health?

Women’s health includes a broad range of services, including:

Well-woman exams

A well-woman exam is a complete health assessment that evaluates your breasts, uterus, vulva, and other reproductive organs. The exam includes a breast and pelvic exam, as well as a Pap smear. The quick test involves collecting a small sample of cervical cells to detect signs of cervical cancer.

Kathleen and her team strive to provide trauma-informed well-woman exams for every patient to ensure you feel safe and comfortable during your visit.

Contraception counseling

Kathleen and the team offer multiple forms of contraception, including birth control pills and intrauterine devices (IUDs).

STD screenings and treatments

Screening for sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) is the most effective tool to keep you and your community safe. Blood work and urinalysis are the two most common methods to test for STDs. If your test returns positive, Kathleen and the team can provide the appropriate treatments.

Mammography referral

The American Cancer Society encourages all women to have a mammogram by age 40. Women with a family history of breast cancer may benefit from earlier screenings. Kathleen can refer you to a radiology center for mammography if you’re due for a breast cancer screening.

Perinatal and postpartum depression support

Whether you’re currently pregnant, have recently given birth, or are caring for an infant, Kathleen and the team offer trauma-informed support and guidance as you navigate hormonal fluctuations.

Gynecological services for transgender patients

Gynecological care for transgender patients may include STD protection, vaginal, vulvar, and breast exams, as well as counseling on dilation techniques to maintain a vaginal opening.

What health issues do women face?

Kathleen and the team strive to prevent and treat many common health concerns in women, including:

  • Ovarian cysts and cancer
  • Breast cancer
  • Cervical cancer
  • Endometriosis
  • Vaginal pain or discomfort
  • Urinary tract infections (UTIs)
  • Uterine fibroids
  • Iron-deficiency anemia
  • Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS)

Other health issues that disproportionately affect women are anxiety, rheumatoid arthritis, fibromyalgia, and osteoporosis. Kathleen and the team understand that every woman faces unique health challenges. That’s why they’re proud to provide comprehensive 60-minute appointments for every patient.
